THE COLLECTOR’S READING CORNER / 02
Browser pets vs.
collectible characters
Browser pets and character collections can both make the internet feel more personal. “Browser pet” is a broad label, though. Before installing, look at what you actually do with the character and how often it asks for your attention.
Companionship and collecting reward different habits
A pet-style experience often centers on spending time with a familiar character. Depending on the product, that could mean watching it idle, interacting with it, or caring for it. A collectible experience centers on discovering characters, filling gaps, and arranging favorites. Some products combine these ideas, so the label alone is not enough.
Tab Haunts focuses on discovery and display. You catch ghosts as they float around websites, collect twelve distinct characters, and complete three sets. You do not need to feed them, maintain a care schedule, or keep them alive.
Compare the everyday experience
| Question | A pet-style experience may offer | Tab Haunts beta |
|---|---|---|
| What brings me back? | A familiar companion or care routine | Finding uncollected ghosts and completing sets |
| When do I interact? | Whenever the pet is visible or needs attention | During occasional encounters or when opening the collection |
| What do I customize? | The pet or its surroundings, depending on the app | Six display slots and unlocked set backdrops |
| What happens if I stop? | Check the individual product’s care rules | Your existing local collection remains; no care penalty |
| Does progress sync? | Check the individual product’s account and save rules | No. It stays in the same Chrome profile |
Surprise works best when you can pause it
Surprise encounters can be fun during casual browsing and distracting during focused work. Tab Haunts lets you pause encounters. Its small ghosts stop roaming when hovered or focused, and a reduced-motion preference makes them stationary. You can claim a waiting ghost from the toolbar popup with a keyboard.
Daily limits should be easy to understand
The beta allows up to three successful finds per local calendar day, including your starter. Offers are at least ninety seconds apart, and an unclaimed offer expires after five minutes. These limits slow down collecting; they are not invitations to buy extra attempts. There are no purchases in this release.
Every ghost can appear on any supported website. Character hints describe their personalities, rather than instructions to visit a particular website. Rare ghosts have lower selection weights among the characters you have not collected yet.
Pick the experience you actually want
If you want one recognizable companion while you work, inspect pet-style products for their interaction and care rules. If you enjoy a checklist slowly filling up and a display of favorites, a collection may fit better. You do not need either kind of extension to be productive; the point can simply be enjoying a small character.
